Prayers for peace in Afghanistan

Prayers for Peace in Afghanistan, Two Million Refugees— 068

Join me today in praying for peace in Afghanistan and for the more than two million refugees who have been displaced. My name is Fouad Abou-Rizk and I am a Catholic who writes Humanitarian Prayers to encourage people to pray for those suffering most in our world.

Prayers

I pray for peace in Afghanistan, that warring parties will cease fighting and make peace. I pray that the government will be able to regain control of the entire country. I pray that you will put love and peace into the hearts and minds of all who wage war.

I pray that civilians will not continue to be targeted in war and terrorist attacks. I pray that extremist ideologies that glorify violence and terrorism will be extinguished.

I pray that the poor and vulnerable in Afghanistan will have sufficient access to shelter, food, clean water, healthcare, and education.

I pray that the nearly 2.5 million Afghan refugees as well as those internally displaced will be treated with mercy and compassion. I pray that wherever they go, they will be met by people with resources to help them.

Notes and Explanations

The war in Afghanistan has two main sides: the government and the Taliban, the latter being an Islamic militant/terrorist group. The Taliban control an estimated half of the country.

According to the United Nations, 3800 Afghan civilians, including over 1000 children, were killed in 2018. This is the highest number of civilians deaths ever recorded in a single year in the country. Both sides are responsible for civilian casualties. The Hazara, an ethnic minority, are especially targeted.

Afghanistan’s president has said that 45,000 Afghan security forces have been killed since September 2014. The U.S. government has been negotiating with the Taliban in an effort to make peace, however, the Taliban refuse to negotiate with the Afghan government.

There are almost 2.5 million registered refugees from Afghanistan, most of whom reside in neighboring countries. Afghans make up about one-tenth of the world’s refugee population. Over 340,000 Afghans became newly internally displaced in 2018. A little bit over 15,000 refugees returned to Afghanistan in 2018.
