Pray for Rohingya Refugees in Bangladesh— 063

Join me today in praying for the approximately one million Rohingya refugees from Myanmar who have fled to neighboring Bangladesh. My name is Fouad Abou-Rizk, and I write Humanitarian Prayers to encourage people to pray for those suffering most in our world.

I pray that the refugee camps in Bangladesh, home to about one million Rohingya, will have sufficient housing, sanitation, food, clean water, healthcare, and counseling services to provide for the needs of each person. I pray especially for quality care for pregnant women, new mothers, and young children.

I pray that refugees will be provided with the opportunity to apply for refugee status and be recognized as refugees within Bangladesh. I pray that the most vulnerable will be able to be resettled in third countries.

I pray that Rohingya refugees will not be forced back to Myanmar where they are likely to be persecuted. I pray that the Rohingya people will not continue to be persecuted in Myanmar.

I pray that each refugee will be treated with mercy and compassion. I pray that each of the Rohingya will encounter the peace of Christ to bear their burdens.

Notes and Explanations

The Rohingya people are a Muslim ethnic group from Myanmar. They are persecuted and face segregation within Myanmar: the government does not recognize them as an ethnic group home to Myanmar or provide them citizenship, claiming that they are “Bengalis,” from Bangladesh.

Starting in August 2017, over 700,000 Rohingya fled to neighboring Bangladesh as refugees in a period of a few months during a period of intense persecution perpetrated by Myanmar’s military, which included torture, mass murder, and gang-rape. An MSF/Doctors Without Borders survey estimated that at least 6,700 people were killed, including over 700 children under the age of five.

United Nations officials said in October 2018 that Myanmar’s top military officials should be prosecuted for war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide.

There are now about one million Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh, with some having arrived from persecutions in previous years and decades. They live in extremely large refugee camps, with living conditions continually deteriorating. Bangladesh’s government wants them to start returning to Myanmar. However, under the 1951 Refugee Convention, returning refugees to a place where they are liable to be persecuted is not allowed.
