4 Super Simple Ways to Help The Poor Internationally

The Bible says a lot about helping the poor. Jesus made a big deal about it, saying in Matthew 25:45 (NAB),

“Amen, I say to you, what you did not do for one of these least ones, you did not do for me.”

When people think of helping the poor, they may think of volunteering at a soup kitchen or giving a meal to a homeless person. Those are great ways to help the poor in your community! However, those actions are not affecting the lives of the poor in different countries.

Poverty internationally is often very different than in America. A priest from a Catholic nonprofit came to my church recently and said that $100 can feed a family of four in the Caribbean for a year! There are many easy ways you can help the poor internationally, and they don’t all involve giving money.

You can raise awareness

Raise Awareness

People can’t work to resolve a problem if they don’t know it exists. There are so many different issues facing the poor internationally: hunger, human trafficking, a lack of education, war and conflict, refugees, and women’s rights. The list could go much further.

Maybe there is one issue that you’re especially passionate about. If you are a regular reader of Humanitarian Prayers, you will notice that I am especially passionate about victims of war and conflict as well as refugees.

What does raising awareness mean? It doesn’t mean that you have to become a public speaker and host an event at your church, school, or community, though that would be awesome! It can be as simple as sharing a post from an international nonprofit on Facebook. When you share something online, I suggest saying how it matters to you. This personal connection will make a greater difference in how people receive it instead of scrolling by.

You can pray

You Can Pray

If you are a Christian, prayer can be very simple: it’s as easy as just talking to God in your mind. You can pray that those facing hunger will be provided with food to eat and for peace in places affected by war. If you need some ideas on how to pray for the poor internationally, Humanitarian Prayers is a great place to start!

I couldn’t go through this without mentioning the Prayer of the Lady of All Nations, a prayer that the Blessed Mary Virgin revealed to a woman to pray for peace in our world. Mary said that if this prayer is prayed once a day, “I assure you that the world will change.” The prayer is as follows…

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Father, send now Your Spirit over the earth. Let the Holy Spirit live in the hearts of all nations, that they may be preserved from degeneration, disaster, and war. May the Lady of All Nations, the Blessed Virgin Mary, be our Advocate. Amen.

You can sponsor a child

You can sponsor a child

Education is one of the greatest ways to change an individual life in another country. Being educated allows a person to break out of the cycle of poverty by giving them the tools to be able to get a skilled and well-paying job as an adult. Many sponsored children grow up to be doctors, teachers, and other everyday heroes!

Starting a sponsorship is super easy. You just go to the website of a nonprofit that does child sponsorship (compare different organizations first), pick a child, enter your payment information, and let the money come out of your bank account once a month. Nothing more is required, although it’s also good to write letters to your sponsored student a few times a year. Pretty easy.

You can make a one-time donation

You can make a donation

When I get some extra income, I like to make small donations to organizations that work to resolve issues I’m passionate about. I suggest choosing a specific issue you’re passionate about and finding what organizations work to meet those needs. I also highly recommend going to the correct webpage on an organization’s website that will fund a specific issue or affected location, rather than their general fund.

Super Simple

I hope that you have found these four avenues to help the poor inspiring and un-intimidating. Comment and let me know which way you want to help!
