Pray for an End to the Ebola Outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo — 050

Join me today in prayers concerning the threat of the newest Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo. My name is Fouad Abou-Rizk and I am a Catholic who is passionate about international crisis relief. I write Humanitarian Prayers to encourage people to pray for those suffering most in our world.

I pray that the newest Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo will be contained quickly and prevented from spreading. I pray for persistence and perseverance for all the doctors and nurses treating patients.

I pray that conflict will not prevent people from being able to be reached and treated by healthcare workers. I pray that all those infected will be treated and their lives saved. I pray that no more people will die of Ebola in the DRC.

I pray that those who mourn the deaths of their loved ones from Ebola will be comforted.

Notes and Explanations

At the beginning of August, the Democratic Republic of Congo faced a second (and separate) Ebola outbreak of the summer. Ebola can be transmitted very easily and kills approximately fifty percent of those who become infected. For facts about Ebola from the World Health Organization, click here.

So far there have been almost 100 cases of the disease in the Kivu province in the north of the country and over sixty people have died.

Doctors who treat Ebola patients have to cover their entire body, causing them extreme heat. They have to duct tape their gloves around their coats so that there is no path for any of the sweat or fluids from the patient to enter their bodies. Every time they enter or exit the treatment area, they have to be sprayed with water. One doctor has been infected with the disease in the current outbreak.
